How and when did you start playing guitar? Do you have any tips for a beginner? ^_^

I started in summer 2008 after I got back from Phoenix Rising. Nina couldn't make it, so I wasn't able to play without her and came home motivated to learn an instrument so I wouldn't have to miss an opportunity to play a great show like that again. I taught myself by looking up the chords to songs I knew, following chord charts, and playing every day until I was physically incapable of moving my fingers anymore.

My tip is to not stop when your fingers start to hurt. They're going to hurt, but you won't build up callouses unless you actually keep playing consistently every day. The repetition also helps you to memorize chords and practice switching between them. You'll also need to build up the muscles in your fingers in order to play certain chords.

I had that guitar for 4 years before I was able to play it, and I accomplished that in only a few months once I actually tried. The previous times, I failed because I wasn't willing to keep playing through the pain.
