Go to as many smaller, local things as you can to make up for it. For every big conference show, we play like 75 little ones a year. You could also join or start a Harry Potter meetup group and start hosting your own get togethers and events! The fandom is wonderful, even in small doses, but those small doses can help you to get the feeling of the big cons on a smaller scale.
